Besides that, credit card purchases are easier and you don't have to put the money up front...

Banks are losing a lot of money on fraudulent use of credit cards. Debit cards will not be allowed for Internet purchases IMO because they carry the same risk as credit cards except the consumer pays for the loss ... the banks do not want to have to deal with that.

Right now banks are very reluctant to give VISA or Mastercard merchant accounts to Internet only merchants because of the high level of fraud on the net.

There are a lot of things that are never talked about but these problems exist. Why do you think the banks and credit card companies are pushing so hard for smart cards to go through? Also the phone companies are doing the same thing with payphones, home phones etc. The reason they are doing these things is because credit cards and debit cards don't solve the problems to their satisfaction.

You are thinking like a consumer. As a consumer your liability is limited to $50 if your VISA or Mastercard number gets picked up over the Net (and trust me it's not hard to do even if the merchant is using a secure server). The banks and the merchants are paying for these high levels of Internet fraud involving credit cards. That's why they are spending billions of dollars to launch the smart cards.

If you want I can explain to you in detail why even now the transactions which are supposed to be secure are not really secure.

Lola:)
