Going with the theory that the contents of her paper had something to do with her demise, as the deadline drew nearer, then so did the 'problem' it may or may not have contained. Someone perhaps thought it contained damaging material, and acted accordingly; whether it actually contained such material is immaterial (how's that play on!). There are many freaks out there who are so one-dimensional that they blow everything out of proportion.
Just a thought.

...she is 3 blocks away from home and says she's tired. So who or what drew her out of her apartment.

I think you have the order of events a tad off. She parked the car just north of her apartment and had to go four blocks due south to drop off the keys. Her apartment was on the way which would explain why she may have stopped off there. When she met Peter Stein it was before she dropped off the keys at a substation accessed via a door inside the Phelps Gate archway. Rather than retrace her steps to go home, she proceeded to go through Phelps Gate and take a left turn onto College St. She was seen somewhere between that spot outside the gate and the next street corner at Elm Street. If she took a left onto Elm she'd have been on her way towards home. Had she gone straight another couple of miles she'd have been at the crime scene.

What was said to the parents or known by the parents for them to even make such a statement to begin with.

I feel confident based on numerous discussion with people in a position to know in saying both the Jovins and Van de Velde have immense trust in law enforcement. My guess is just like a patient pretty much assures themselves their doctor will "heal" them, crime victims assure themselves the police will find the person who wronged them. To not trust the police would probably be too emotionally painful.

I do have reason to believe the police said more to the Jovins than just "don't worry, we'll get the guy." I think they told them they were confident they had their guy in James Van de Velde. Based on Yale's actions to cancel Jim's classes and based on letters the Jovins have written to the media about Jim, I think the logical (but IMO not accurate) conclusion to be drawn is that the police must have had strong evidence he did it. I defy anyone to find any article ever written which has addressed the things we've addressed on this thread. Jim wasn't talking to reporters (had someone expressed an interest in the facts of the case and not wanted quotes for a features piece he would have cooperated) and no reporter saw a need to do their own investigation so no one really had any incentive to think too deeply about the case to challenge the police.

So, to answer your question, I think the quotes by the Jovins are squarely based on the assumption Jim did it. While people I've talked to are pretty sure the Jovins have been told much more about the investigation than what the press has been told, no one has any clue just what information that might be as the Jovins have been tight-lipped about the investigation (as well they should). I know Jim wants to know what they think they have because you can't fight secrets. Why the press won't confront the police about either coming forward with anything they have that would make him a suspect or to finally admit they don't have and never did have any credible evidence that pointed to him, I don't know. If need be, this is an issue I hope to force myself (g).
