Has anyone tried the free Alta Vista service? They advertised for a while & then backed off. You have to visit their advertisers once in a while or it disconnects.

I have been wondering if CPQ and AV might offer a free internet service with a computer purchase. Sort of a take-off on some of the rebate programs where you get a rebate on your computer purchase if you buy 1-2yrs of internet service.

Here is a hot New Years eve event for those who have no plans yet. Check on the internet! I don't think this will be on my list of things to do.

Keynote Measures 42 Web Sites in Major Time Zones Around the World --
Hotline Will Report on How the Internet Survives Y2K

SAN MATEO, Calif., Dec 29, 1999 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Find out the effect
of Y2K on the Internet with hourly updates from The Keynote Y2K
Internet Performance Hotline.

This resource is available to the press over New Years and provides
reports on how the Internet is surviving the new Millennium. Call the
Hotline at 650/522-1234 for hourly updates or receive updates
automatically via email, by sending an email request to
press@keynote.com. Results will also be available on Keynote's site at
www.keynote.com.

Keynote (Nasdaq:KEYN), the Internet performance authority(TM), will
measure and report on the performance and availability of the Internet
in all global time zones as the year 2000 rolls in around the planet.
Keynote is also available for quantitative data and commentary:

-- To talk with a Keynote representative prior to New Years Eve,
contact one of the Keynote PR team listed here.
-- Keynote representatives will be available on New Year's Eve and
New Year's Day. Please leave a message on the Hotline, as
instructed by the Hotline recording.

When: The Keynote Y2K Internet Performance Hotline is currently
operating with information on Keynote's Y2K measurement methodology.
The Hotline will be updated hourly on December 31 and January 1 to
report on Internet performance and availability as the Millennium
begins in the Pacific and sweeps across the time zones of the world.

How: Keynote will measure the performance and availability of a major
web site in each of the 24 global time zones from Keynote's global
network of measurement computers in over 90 locations around the world.
This will provide an immediate perspective on the effect of Y2K based
on over 200,000 measurements each day during the global Millennium
change. Benchmark measurements of the selected web sites have already
begun.

The selected web sites that Keynote is measuring for the Keynote Y2K
Internet Performance Hotline and report are physically located in all
the major time zones across the world, from Tonga in the Pacific on the
western side of the international date line to Hawaii on the eastern
side. As the Millennium arrives in each time zone, the web sites and
Internet infrastructure in that time zone may experience Y2K failures
that could lead to performance and availability failures. Keynote's
measurement computers will indicate infrastructure malfunctions if web
sites in an area become inaccessible.

The measured web sites include the following:
