This would be a huge loss leader for CPQ, at a point in time when they don't need one. If it were a co-branding deal with somebody like AOL/MSFT...then it might make sense....but a purely free ISP offer would be a killer.

David,
That is the one I tried. Speed and everything was good, but the bumping was bad. The connection was also local. I would use them if the bumps weren't so frequent. Maybe I will give it another shot now that the holiday shopping season is over.

Does CPQ own any Alta-Vista or did they get rid of all of it? I was under the impression that they still owned some, but then I don't follow CPQ that close. I just bought in because the technical picture looked pretty good.

I have used the free services. Alta Vista is good. However, I would not recommend them to someone who uses the net a great deal. You can overcome the bumps by getting in the habit of accessing the alta vista window every 15 or 20 minutes. For me it has improved since it was first offered. Also some of its problems are the same as regular ISPs, bumping and busy lines. If you stay on for long periods of time you are better off paying for a good ISP that doesn't bump. If you just use it an hour a day Alta Vista might be for you.
