~~~~OT~~~~ Are golfers athletes? :o)
I think it is silly to compare one sport to another. Dominating your sport is the only way to compare apples to apples. Jack is tops but I think Bobby Jones should be considered among the best.
Is wrestling a sport?
Michael Jordan was named athlete of the century by ESPN in their year long release gala thing. Next three were Babe Ruth, Ali and Jim Brown. I had personally picked Jordan, but thought Jim Thorpe should have been in the top 3 or so.
Athlete of the century...
Wasn't there a guy in the 1930s who won a pile of Olympic gold medals in a number of different events? The guy also played football, and excelled at track and field. Played baseball for some spending money as a kid and this violated Olympic rules and his medals were withdrawn. I think his name was Jim Thorpe?
I think anyone winning an Olympic gold proves themselves a worthy athlete, but to win several, is over the top. Mark Spitts (spelling?) won a few gold, (1972?) but they were all in swimming events. Too bad people don't remember accomplishments from the early years.
I think Tony Curtis played Thorpe in a movie.
Cheers, PW.
P.S. Decathelon winners are better athletes than single sport medalists, in my opinion.
P.S. Ali single handedly brought boxing into the realm of a major spectator sport. Perhaps his contribution to both the sport and the box-office earned his recognition.
