the WriteOnceRunAnywhere promise of Java is showing up now in a big way on the server side and moving toward the client side

Java may have its advantages over C++, like a big increase in programmer productivity, for example, but let's not delude ourselves into thinking that the only issue is getting trained programmers and the building bandwagon of adoption. Java still has a 2-3X penalty in execution performance on the server compared with good C++ code and that's a pretty hefty disincentive ... unless you are selling iron, I suppose.

Of course, if you care about server performance, you can still use a Sun product by writing in TOOL, the best OO4GL on the planet, pick up something like 3X programmer productivity and 2-3X execution performance.
