The Constitution precludes the establishment of a church by the federal government. It was not immediately taken to forbid establishment within individual states. Further, Washington and other Founders often spoke with approval of the civilizing effects of religion, while abhorring the divisiveness of sects, and affirming the citizenship of all, whether Christian or Jew, religious or atheist. It makes sense to affirm that neither Christianity nor one of its sects is a condition of either citizenship or the holding of office to a nation overwhelmingly Muslim. This does not mean that various accommodations to the beliefs of the majority were not made by municipalities, states, and even the federal government, going unchallenged until this century.......
