happy, i still think the approx 50 % going to welfare is misleading...your taxes here there or everywhere (to quote the beatles) goes for many things besides welfare : education, health care, roads, libraries, paying interest on debt (yuck but most countries have debt), etc etc...so your dough wasn't just going to the neighbour and his ilk. you want the above services, yes ? you can read up on newfoundland, there isin't the action there for people to do many things besides fishing...the types of jobs you suggest are often done by homeowners themselves. i was in cape breton nova scotia two years ago. the local paper only had two jobs available, one was baby sitting and one was commission sales. they had a make work project there to build a replica of some old fort, after the mine closed, but it was a stopgap situation. i know australia's immigration policy is racist and i know its tough. but again, there are not a lot of alternatives for people to go to. i also don't sweat about the guy who tiled your kitchen making big dough. the trades make big dough. i used to know a guy who was a tradesman and he had an accident at work. what do you think the big bucks do for him now ? i also used to work myself hard, whether it was hours or more being overly committed. it ain't worth it...so many people who do it are suckers... as far as taxes, many, many of us when we are 99 and old and gray will rely on a 10 $ an hour orderly to bring us toast. the minimum wage and 'underclass' crowd gotta live too. and our pal kissypots, despite some of his ravings and nonsense has something here to say. our society has a new kind of leech, imo, the streetwalkers of wallstreet, the ipo/retire crowd, and management that does squat except abuse its staff. Are these leeches really any different than the beach bum who says, screw it, i'll just get the government to send me the cheque ? is a golden parachute after a few years of messing up a company any different ? australia will be ok and still is a better place to be than many many many places in the world. ike
