Marvin, your broker has to say something to make money. Let me share with you a true story. It involves this guy in the city I grew up in in Asia. He would run a business from his house where he would spread the word he had access to school officials and he could use his influence with the school officials to rig the test results and ensure that high school student passed the prerequisite test to graduate from high school. He would demand a huge fee from students to use his influence with the officials he claimed to know. After the exams, those students who fared badly and feared they would not get through, made a beeline for his services. He would guarantee a full refund for those students who would fail to get through. A pretty strong deal. And guess what, the theory of probability kicked in and most of his clients would get through and would not require him to do anything. He ended up pocketing their money. He gladly refunded those who failed to get through since he did not have to go through any effort. A very clever idea, make money legally just by playing on the apprehensions of the people. Do you think a broker operates in a similar scenario when it comes to providing advice based on what he/she thinks the trend of the stock is going to be. Luckily for his business, there are only 2 paths for a stock to go; up or down and hence makes the prediction task a no brainer.
