Your point is well taken and I agree that eliminating wiring may be a strong advantage. The oxidation rate of SiC at 500C is relatively limited, but in practicality slow degradation of a sensor is not desirable. Still it may be useful especially if it is used to detect optical emissions. The actual sensor could then be behind a window of sorts.

The opportunity lies in that it could be possible with SiC since the physical properties do not exclude it.
