Good point. As a Catholic, I have to believe that natural selection was intended, because one of the bedrocks of the Catholic faith is the belief in free will. Because free will exists, there can be no preordination of events, at least human events, although of course there can be Divine foreknowledge, God being omniscient. But given the almost infinite size of the Universe and the almost infinite nature of universal time, it's statistically likely that life would evolve on many planets to the extent that life forms would apprehend the nature of creation, and feel the urge to praise God.
