Remember Cree is a small company so niche markets might be enough to make it grow many times it's present size. It doesn't have to become another GE for us to make money as investors..

I remember seeing a number of 15 million referring to passenger vehicles, but I don't recall the exact market definition.

Assuming an average of 6 cylinders and one sensor per cylinder that could get you to roughly a 100 mil. I would venture a guess that trucks would probably add several million more. I doubt one could get more than $100 per vehicle and probably $20-$30 is more likely unless the benefits were truly outstanding. Still for a company like Cree that would be attractive even if it wouldn't make them the size of Intel.

The latest price I saw referencing the LED's was 8 cents.
You would have to sell a lot more LED's to equate that level (of course the applications are more ubiquitous).

In one of the references I posted, the DARPA white paper stated that about half (if I remember correctly) of the electricity in the US drives motors. High powered devices for motors that reduce losses could also be a substantial market.

I think ample opportunities are present...Cree just has to execute properly and timely.

I would like to learn more about what markets the company sees as being decent size in the near future.... I mean 'spacecraft & power plants' aren't going to cut it.

david,
presently, everyone has been bantering about high temp applications. as far as mass markets, how about a few monitoring chips on every internal combustion machine. the best part of the spacecraft thing is that nasa pays for the research and cree gets to develop products that have other apps.

let's not forget the apps not requiring high temp...communications, microwave, blue laser, etc.

every light bulb replaced by a cree led is a mass market app. how many 12v light bulbs are in use in cars, rv's, buses, boats, etc, etc.
this is fun,
