JRH: Recommend against the inclusion of IDC in W&W:

See this from Voltaire on the Q thread - succinct and to the point - as Votaire is:

"Talk : Communications : Qualcomm - Coming Into Buy Range

Hi chaz," [note this is Cha2 here on the G&K - not chaz here]

"You could not be more correct. IDC is a piece of S---! However, you know me about as well as anyone, remember, the only question I ever ask when someone tells me about a stock is: Does Anyone Want It? The fools want it and I bought and will sell it to them. Bought in at 39 and the damn fools are still buying. Fundamentals are almost always priced in a stock but psychology is not. Thanks for the concern and I do not suggest anyone buy it either.

Voltaire"

Not GG material IMO. But note, not only Voltaire but Teflon bought.

My comment to Teflon on the other thread was "caution.... caveat emptor "

Cha2

Note: Both Teflon and Voltaire have very substantial gains in this stock - so in that sense they have made "profitable" investments.

JHR: In fairness, here is Voltaire's supplementary post on IDC:

Hi Manx,

you tickled me with your post and you flatter me too much. I am sure the shorts will be safe with that info.

I probably was too quick to say it is a total piece of s---!

My reasoning just comes from logic. The true indication of patent strength and what a company possesses in this regard is REVENUES. Why is it that after 5 or 6 years of legal wrangling QCOM has REVENUES in the billions and IDC's growth actually declined? You must know, this is not my first Rodeo with IDC, I owned them big time about 5 years ago. It appears to me that unlike QCOM, they sold their soul for up front license fees and did not solidify their royalty stream. Now, I understand they are still having to sue everybody and their brother. My father always told me, if you are going to hire a lawyer, make sure you hire him on the front end and not the back end. To me that is the big difference between IDC and QCOM, Dr. Jacobs and crew hired the right attorneys on the front end.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!

having said all of that, if and it is a big if, IDC comes out of it's litigation on the winning end, the rewards could be mind boggling but I will have to see it to believe it.

My bet was not made on any of the above so you can say outside of my bet and the fact that I feel TDMA is inferior to CDMA, I really couldn't care less. My bet on IDC and GSTRF was made based on the psychological reaction from their affiliation with CDMA.

I think I will continue to make money based on my decision and if you are correct, you will make money based on yours. Just because my faith is so strong about QCOM has nothing to do with my picking up a little change on IDC if they are going to give it away.

Good luck as long as it doesn't hurt CDMA, at least I am honest about it.

If anyone buys this based on my decision to do so, UNDERSTAND WHY I DID!

Sir Chartmeister, I stood idly by while this IDC discussion has progressed (much to some folks pleasure). <---(joke, Frank).

I must jump in now and say "stop this nonsense". IDC is not a Gorilla candidate, its not a King candidate, and it is not likely to ever be either, so it is not a W&W candidate.

There is no evidence of dominance, emergence or value chain formation. The only thing IDC has going is an escalating stock price.

Justin, don't put IDC on the W&W list. I took (and have since sold...profitably by a thou) a small position based on the run, and then started looking deeper, liking it less and less as I went along. Essentially, they claim patents yet to be proved, have apparent internal efficiencies, but a very small footprint in the overall market. Shiny pebble at the moment, could be just a flare. Too early.

Thread:
Does anyone have any candidates for the W&W Index that deal with the DSL market? DSL is growing like mad and I am wondering if royalty or primates might emerge out of this marketplace. Merlin, on your thread header post, you list ADSL as a potential gorilla breeding ground. Do you feel that a gorilla could emerge out of the equipment market, even though there are DSL standards? Or do DSL standards really exist?

Just trying to get some discussion on the subject :o) !!
