SATYAM INFOWAY LAUNCHES WWW.SERWIZ.COM
The first Indian Mega Services Portal

PRESS - January, 2000.

Chennai, January 4, 2000:

Satyam Infoway Limited (Nasdaq : SIFY) today announced the launch of www.serwiz.com - India's first virtual market place to buy and sell services. This is Satyam Infoway's Millenium gift to the Indian professionals. The website is set to open up global markets for Indians in the service industry by providing a virtual instant link between the service provider and the consumer of services.

The last decade witnessed a tremendous growth in the information technology services. The world became increasingly smaller with connectivity. Knowledge emerged as the dominance factor in global economy. India emerged as a quality and cost effective provider of services and a super knowledge power in the Information sector during this period. Offshore software development made the world borderless. At the dawn of the new millennium, a new opportunity beckons India. An opportunity that will dwarf the information technology opportunity that India has so far captured. And this opportunity is the ability to offer services to the global consumers. With the connected world it is virtually at the doorstep of the Indian Service provider.

Services constitute a major proportion of the GDP, globally. By the year 2020 the world GNP is estimated at an astronomical size of about US$ 50 trillion and the services sector is estimated to constitute nearly 75 % of this. India is poised to play a dominant role with its trained manpower. Knowledge driven opportunities will be enormous. Satyam Infoway has taken cognizance of this factor and has pioneered serwiz.com - a bridge that will translate opportunities to realities.

The spectrum of services covered under this IT enabled portal include but are not limited to call centers, medical services, engineering, legal services, architectural, accounting, payroll, back office operations, insurance claims processing, content development, logistic management, R&D Services, educational services, Journalism etc.,

Speaking on the occasion of launch of www.serwiz.com, Mr. B. Ramalinga Raju, Chairman, Satyam Computer Services Limited remarked " The opportunity for virtual delivery of services is still unexplored in India. Millions of small and medium sized businesses and professionals in India can now effectively offer their services to the global market through our initiative. While they bring in their skills, we will assist them with the soft and hard infrastructure and marketing support which gives the service provider, valuable time to devote to quality, speed of delivery and price of their services. We believe in promoting the spirit of entrepreneurship. In short, this is akin to virtual visa to the world for the Indian service provider".

Mr. R. Ramaraj, Managing Director, Satyam Infoway observed," We have identified that the demand for IT enabled services could be substantial in the next 10 years. India has a huge talent pool that will make it an obvious destination for global players to source services. Satyam Infoway will play an important role in growing the service sector through this innovative and trend setting portal. Our vision is to bring dependable, quality service at lower cost to the world".

India to Have 4 Private International Gateways Soon

By Uday Lal Pai
India Correspondent, asia.internet.com

[January 5, 2000--MUMBAI] The government of India seems to understand that the growth of Internet services and e-commerce is restricted by the monopoly of international gateways by Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (VSNL).

Four applications for private international gateways were cleared in the first round.

Sources at the Telecom Commission revealed that Satyam Infoway Ltd., Zee Group, Bharti BT Internet and Jain TV are among the first ISPs in India to set up international gateways.

The vetting of applications has been speeded up after a top-level directive last month that the fate of applications should be decided in a month's time.

ISPs have been allowed to bypass VSNL gateways for overseas data services, which do not carry voice telephony. Market analysts expressed hope that the first private gateway for ISPs will be operational by April.

Satyam Infoway (Nasdaq: SIFY) is the largest private ISP in the country followed by Bharti BT Internet, a 51:49 joint venture ISP by Bharti Enterprises and British Telecom PLC.

Bharti BT Internet is currently evaluating a Nasdaq listing.

The Zee Group is slated to invest nearly $100 million to develop its new ISP and portal business: ZeeNext.com. Details of Jain TV's plans are not known.

Private ISPs currently rely on Department of Telecom (DoT) services and MTNL (Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd.) for customer dial-up lines, and on VSNL for access to the international backbone. The new gateways will facilitate faster growth in e-commerce in India.

According to sources, more names are likely to be approved later this week. The DoT services' licensing and regulation group -- the nodal agency for providing single window clearance to the proposals for obtaining bandwidths from foreign satellites -- has so far received about 25 applications.
