Lizzie, that's incorrect. The value of the box seats is what the recipient would have to pay as fair market value for them. If they go sell for $500, that's what they're worth. Are you saying that if an airline seat is "unsold" it has no intrinsic value? Try using that one next time you wish to book a flight at the last minute. Any gifts you give employees or business associates have to be "de minimus" ($25 or under), otherwise they are supposed to report the gift as income.
