Two words for you Cosmo: GREAT POST!!

However, you are not one of "The Millionaire Next Door" as defined in that book...which is good news...most of them (the "BOOK MND's") became wealthy thanks to living like cheapskates...a life somewhat governed by a (IMO) very peculiar self-denial M.O. An extreme case of such behavior exists in a classic Worth article, see my profile for the link.

The REAL-DEAL MND's I suspect are like you...enjoying a good life but never forgetting the value of a dollar. And, while eschewing the rigid self-denial of the book "MND"'s, they refuse to play the "keeping up with the Joneses" ratrace.

Finally, I think the REAL MND's quietly lift up others. Example: I know of a non profit humanitarian organization that was pleasantly shocked to find a anonymous six-figure donation made out of the blue. You know what? I want to be able to be that Real deal MND!

Cheers. Thanks again for your post.

Cosmo, having come from a poor background as well, I found the first part of your post inspirational, but your unfortunate choice of closing comments offended me and probably 80% of the folks on the thread. I'm guessing you felt provoked by some PM, but that isn't justification for rudeness, which I've long considered to be the only Off Topic area of discussion on this thread. Frankly, I don't care how much money anyone has. I'm interested in good ideas, but only if they are presented in a polite manner.

Frank

PS. To those losers who will never even get close to my wealth who PM me whenever I talk about it, BUZZ OFF.

Cosmo, I'm not sure who's been sending PMs to you, but it seems like they've been generous to do it through PM. Personally, I find this kind of remark offensive and I've had enough talk about your wealth. Some people, like LindyBill, speak of achieving their goals in a classy way that is intended to teach and inspire those who don't have seven figure portfolios. The only thing you've taught me is rich people can be really big jerks.

The size of the portfolio doesn't carry much weight around here. It certainly doesn't give you the right to call people losers just because they may never achieve a seven figure portfolio. After all, wealth is more than what can be measured in currency and material goods.

This thread is usually a class act. You might want to consider whether you're raising or lowering the bar with each post you make.

Eric (who wouldn't mind hanging out with the losers)

This is the least charitable, most unkind, remark I have ever seen on this thread, and I don't want to see it again, therefore, I have put you on my "ignore" list. I promise not to PM you ever. I don't even want to know you.

I loved your post, great balance.
In November my daughter informed me that my young grandson needed private school (too smart and active for the public school) and she could not afford it. I conferred with Uncle and Jerry M (my mentors) and figured out how to afford it. Then the Q took off and now it is no problem...but I was going to do it even if it was difficult (I'm proud of that).
When I went to visit for Christmas the youngster had already had a month at the new school. He is sooooo happy and loves it. I visited the school (it was closed but a teacher there gave me a tour) and could see why he loves it, what a happy, active place.
Money is wonderful.
I'm very thankful to all of you and to Qualcomm.
I should have known about Qualcomm a year and a half ago when they gave $18 million to the Padres stadium (another thing I hate: taxpayer funding of sports franchises, becoming more and more popular) : no company could afford that unless it was mighty sure of its success.
Best wishes to all of you.

I won't PM you, Cosmo, but I will definitely buzz off. I'm not the least bit impressed with your self-congratulatory wealth.

I've never been the slightest interested in the "ignore" function, but I'm gonna find it ASAP.
