I thought Athlon was a microprocessor.

John Fowler was not talking about copying processor architectures, but rather business models. Athlon puts AMD on the bleeding edge of performance where the high margins are, but then again, Intel has always been there. Athlon allows AMD to someday introduce multiprocessor platforms and enter the server arena, but then again, Intel has always been there.

Face it, Ted, the only way AMD is differentiating themselves from the competition (namely Intel) is by trying to run a horse race. It's like Jerry Sanders bragging "Anything Intel can do, we can do better!" But what is AMD doing that is vastly different from what Intel is doing?
