You know- animal females will take in other young. Females seem to be fairly cooperative with young (in most species- this varies, species to species) and in general I think cooperative strategies have worked for females and I think these strategies make women less likely to harm the young of others- ESPECIALLY when combined with our lack of testosterone. Women have evolved under very different pressures than men- so it would be natural that our strategies with young would be quite different. And, indeed, I think they are.
Point about post partum depression - places a burden on OTHERS to make sure she does not harm her child. It isn't "fair" and we probably should evolve so that things like that don't happen but the solution is NOT to ignore the problem- the solution (imo) is education and vigilance.

I don't know, to answer semi-seriously, my impression was that stepmothers were the norm in fairy tales because, well, in the era fairy tales came from, they were more common than stepfathers in general, death in childbirth being fairly common. That doesn't quite explain the rarity of mothers in Disney movies, though.

Cheers, Dan.
