Java is an interpreted language, if memory serves me correctly, and so is slow to execute. I'm not surprised that it croaked.

Won't there be applications that run from web application servers? For example, for my personal use, I have no interest in paying $400 for Microsoft Office, but I would be willing to rent the software license for twenty minutes once a month to update my resume on Word. I would launch whatever version of Word is appropriate for my hardware.

Or, even better, how about applications that are housed entirely on web servers? For example, I'm posting this note on a bulletin board application that's housed entirely on SI servers; I can use any machine with a web browser to use this application. It's totally processor independent.

I do agree with you that these changes won't take place very quickly.

If nothing else, the simple addition of AMD volume parts to the marketplace will "radically change the wintel monopoly". AMD already crushed the market for low-cost PC processors with the K6, and will proceed to crush the market for mid-to-high-end processors with the Athlon. AMD will never see Intel's current profit margins, but then again, I don't think Intel will either.
