Ericsson to Launch CDMA Products in 3Q
January 7, 2000

By Joel D Pinaroc, Metropolitan Computer Times

MANILA, PHILIPPINES

Although the global system for mobile communications
(GSM)is currently the dominant standard used for digital
wireless telephones in most Asian and European
markets, Ericsson is set to introduce products supporting
code-division multiple access (CDMA) later this year.

CDMA is a wireless telephone transmission technology
that is currently widely used in the United States and has
started to make an inroad in some Asian markets.

According to Ulf Jervinge, director, consumer products
division at the local office of Ericsson, the company sees
the growth potential of CDMA in some strategic Asian
countries, including the Philippines.

"About 50 percent of all mobile phone users in the world
uses the GSM standard while the other half uses CDMA
and other digital communications standards. Despite
this, Ericsson believes in the potential of CDMA, so it will
be releasing mobile products supporting CDMA
sometime in the third quarter of this year," Jervinge said.

In a related development, Ericsson launched its latest
GSM-based mobile phones and accessories.

Ericsson released the Ericsson T10, the Ericsson R250,
an "all-weather" phone, and the "Chatboard" - a
"snap-on keyboard" accessory for Ericsson GSM
dual-band phones that allows users to send more easily
not just text messages but also e- mail, in addition to
allowing Web browsing.

The T10, according to Ericsson, is immediately available
while the R250 and the Chatboard, are set for release in
the coming months.
