why the stock is lagging?
If I knew for sure I would have sold all my stock last February. The delays by Intel and Rambus has meant that there have been no new products in 1999 that were really faster, so they have been less compelling, and caused disruptions in DRAM delivery. Storage got hit when the chief supplier Data General was bought by EMC. Consumer space is growing, but has lower prices. Microsoft spent the whole year re-doing Win 95 into Win 98 which was a big yawn for boosting demand. Notebooks can only be built as fast as LCD screens arrive. All in all I would say a lot of problems, each local to a particular product line, hit at the same time (or one after another). None of them appear to be systemic.

yaacov...."what is wrong with dell"

very basic.....dell management and "mikey" included have failed in 1999 to present a clear forward vision of dell the company, beyond being just a highly efficient and profitable assembler. the "bad guys" (ibm, hwp, aapl, gtw, cpq) all reinvented themselves in the eyes of the market. a company can be tremendous as dell is, but unless the ceo plays the "market game", the company and its share price will be ignored. most on this thread disagree, and will adamantly state that this is not the task of a ceo........but if that is what it takes to return shareholder value then just do it... maybe it's time for "mikey" to become "visible"......saw him a lot during his book tour....where is he now....too busy scheduling his next sale of dell stock....

example...kickoff of consumer web pc....great ad campaign???
