NTL to Use Microsoft Platform For UK TV Services January 7, 2000

Business News Archives

British cable operator NTL Inc said on Friday it had chosen Microsoft's TV software platform to deliver enhanced interactive television services in the UK.

"The Microsoft TV platform will enhance the 'free to air' digital terrestrial TV capability of the set-top box," it said.

Services included a digital video recorder using a hard drive not a tape, e-mail and Web-browsing.

Microsoft has a five percent stake in NTL and owns nearly 30 percent of Cable and Wireless Communications Plc, the former cable market leader which NTL will buy pending a monopoly inquiry.

NTL is mainly a cable operator but said Friday's announcement refers to plans to boost its transmission of digital television channels via normal TV aerials, a delivery method used by ONdigital.

ONdigital is owned equally by Carlton Communications and Granada Group Plc.

The Microsoft platform would make it possible for set-top decoders to offer the range of interactive and Internet-related services.

LuxSonor joins Planetweb as a Partner in the new iDVD Category

Friday January 7 8:55pm
Source: BusinessWire

LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 7, 2000--LuxSonor Semiconductors announced today that they will be joining Planetweb, Inc., a leader in the Internet appliance software market, as a partner to help drive the new iDVD Internet appliance category.

iDVD players will enable consumers to watch DVD movies, play audio CD's and utilize the Internet to enhance their entertainment experience, surf, e-mail and shop. Over time, LuxSonor iDVD players will be able to serve relevant and timely information to consumers based on their viewing and listening habits and allow them to customize personal web pages they can view right on their televisions.

"LuxSonor plans to ship the first iDVD chip which in addition to all the iDVD functionality, integrates the modem and Planetweb's Internet software engine on a single chip. We will make this product available to manufacturers in the first half of 2000," said Ed Miller, VP of Advanced Development at LuxSonor Semiconductors.

"iDVDs represent a category where the Internet delivers relevant information and services to consumers in their family rooms," said Gordon Short, Vice President Marketing and Business Development at Planetweb. "This increased integration will drive down the cost of iDVD players, making the iDVD category even more interesting to retail and ISP's and dramatically increase the worldwide growth projections for this market."

Additional Planetweb iDVD Category Partners

Planetweb has also partnered with InterActual Technologies, the developer of PCFriendly(TM), which integrates DVD-Video and DVD-Audio with DVD-ROM capabilities. The partnership will enable DVD media enhanced with Planetweb's PCFriendly-compatible software to be viewed on LuxSonor's iDVD players.

PCFriendly DVDs currently offer an enhanced entertainment experience to computer users with DVD-ROM drives, such as web-based events, E-commerce, interactive games, and other advanced, interactive features. There are already many DVD's on the market with PCFriendly (TM) content. In 2000, it is estimated that over 500 DVDs will provide PCFriendly content.

Additional content partners include DVD Express, Netflix and Infospace.com who will each provide additional relevant content through Planetweb's iDVD portal services.
