The consensus estimate for Thursday's report is
$.63 and last year's Q4 was $.60 but does anyone know
what the "whisper" estimate is?

Thank you for the clarification of the "quiet period" issue. However, I'm not sure I share your level of certainty regarding Intel's ability to meet the consensus expectations. The Gateway shortfall and the fact that Intel's role was part of their explanation seems somewhat analogous to Lucent and its inability to meet customer demand. We may be in for a Lucent-style bout of excuse making on Thursday (although I doubt that INTC would get whacked to that extent to the downside if expectations are not met).

Along these lines, here's a quote from today's Barron's:

BARRON'S - Andrew Bary's column, "The Trader" (an excerpt)

Elsewhere in the tech sector, Microsoft dropped 5 5/16 to 111 7/16 and Intel was off 5/16 to 82. Intel is set to report fourth-quarter profits Thursday, which are expected to come in at 63 cents a share, up from 60 cents a year earlier. It will be interesting to see if Intel falls short once again - and whether the Street will continue to forgive it for profit shortfalls.
