Nice words......but wasted.

Might consider another viewpoint:
Go placidly amid the noise and waste,
And remember what comfort there may be in owning a piece thereof.
Avoid quiet and passive persons, unless you are in need of sleep.
Rotate your tires.
Speak glowingly of those greater than yourself,
And heed well their advice, even though they be turkeys.
Know what to kiss, and when.
Consider that two wrongs never make a right, but that three do.
Wherever possible, put people on hold.
Be comforted that in the face of all aridity and disillusionment,
and despite the changing fortunes of time,
There is always a big future in computer maintenance.

Remember The Pueblo.
Strive at all times to bend, fold, spindle, and mutilate.
Know yourself. If you need help, call the FBI.
Exercise caution in your daily affairs,
Especially with those persons closest to you -
That lemon on your left, for instance.
Be assured that a walk through the ocean of most souls
Would scarcely get your feet wet.
Fall not in love therefore. It will stick to your face.
Gracefully surrender the things of youth: birds, clean air, tuna, Taiwan.
And let not the sands of time get in your lunch.
Hire people with hooks.
For a good time, call 606-4311. Ask for Ken.
Take heart in the bedeepening gloom
That your dog is finally getting enough cheese.
And reflect that whatever fortune may be your lot,
It could only be worse in Milwaukee.

You are a fluke of the universe.
You have no right to be here.
And whether you can hear it or not,
The universe is laughing behind your back.

Therefore, make peace with your god,
Whatever you perceive him to be - hairy thunderer, or cosmic muffin.
With all its hopes, dreams, promises, and urban renewal,
The world continues to deteriorate.
Give up!

Smiles,
Glenn

Nice quote Patricia, I have always found that Shakespeare could coin a phrase suitable for virtually any situation....

" To be generous, guiltless, and of free disposition, is to take those things for bird bolts, that you deem cannon bullets"

Pat:

Your words have high value but they are probably ineffectual. Verbal chastising and appealing to an individual's sense of decency assumes that there is some basis for moral, ethical, or intellectual reproach to effect change.

Reading those posts, do you really think there is? J C Dithers' posts touch upon some of the problems. Anonymity allows frank and open investment talk but it also allows for everything from complete drivel to open war.

Some people antagonize others simply get their kicks from watching the reactions that result. Some are narcissists who enjoy seeing their name mirrored and repeated on the board as often as possible. I'm sure that somewhere out there is a social researcher doing a paper on these types of problems in this medium.

What is completely absent is accountability. Sure, certain individuals have been booted by SI for completely atrocious activity but how far does the envelope have to be pushed for this to happen? A longgggg way. There is no incremental or tiered disciplinary approach. As we have seen, attempts to rationalize disagreements with thoughtfully written posts have as little success as in-your-face posts to embarrass the SI delinquents. There is little or no positive impact and most often it seems to just spur further diatribe.

When Tim began to get serious about running a controlled environment, I really thought he was on to a good idea. By using the encryption, he had the ability to let people in and lock them out. He could have even established control groups within this environment in order to monitor leakage.

Unfortunately, Tim lost the desire. He has been thanked, applauded, admired, and congratulated but he has also been taunted, hammered, betrayed, ridiculed, and denigrated. Trying to fend off the detractors clearly takes its toll.

Those of us that abided by Tim's rules and made a good-faith effort are the ones who lose the most. He cannot trust anyone and is shutting the door to all. It's a great pity and a great loss for all of us.

However, I do wonder why Tim never held those who broke his rules accountable? How many times did he identify incidents where others talked business on the open thread or posted business to other threads? Upon each discovery, Tim said it was the last time, the final warning, people were going to be cut... it never happened. I cannot help but think that, had Tim identified identified and locked a violator out EVERY time, the incidents would have quickly stopped and his group might have been cut to a more manageable size.

Being a stern disciplinarian is not Tim's fort‚. He truly wants to help people. Tim has demonstrated that desire time and again and he has gone out of his way to try and teach, mentor, and support those of us with less experience. Jon Salmon mentioned altruism and that's exactly right. Tim does not receives or expect monetary reward for his acts, they are truly a selfless expression of caring. Yes, he gets cranky and he bleeds when he's back stabbed. So what? We all have our days. There are a lot worse examples of human behavior out there and we've witnessed much of it in the recent posts.

Keep up the good fight Tim.

Buck

to all:

first off from the bottom of my heart i want to thank all of you for your support and kind words. i have been on si going on 4 years now and i have been one of their biggest supporters as well as one of their biggest pain in the butt. but one i have always been is a straight shooter and always willing to help anyone. i even told jas cooper i would let him in the room if he would stop harassing me.

when someone shows up here looking for trouble i will never back down, that is just my nature. i have been a fighter my whole life . i was thinking why do i care so much about people i never met ...well i think it goes back to how i was raised. my oldest brother is mental retarded and he has the kindest soul in the world , always has a smile on his face and never has a bad thing to say about anyone. growing up people would pick on him and make fun of him. i was in 100's of fist fights because of this. and on this thread i see many good people looking for help in a very volatile market. and with all the mistakes the i have made in the past i feel if i can help some of you avoid these mistakes it's a way of giving back...if your not a giver then you are just a taker...you folks have gave me your trust, faith and support. and for that i would do anything for you. i have made well over 200 phone calls on my dime to all parts of the world. i have spoken to people all across the United States as well as Asia and Europe....

i don't want to end what we have which is a first in the online investment world so i'm trying to find a safe place where we can be left alone..as for si..well i think it's time to end my relationship with them..they have become to big and corporate for them to weed out the trouble makers as well as the scam artist. gnet is a billion dollar company but yet they have one person to police thousands.

i have asked them many times to let me have a private forum all of which was promised to me and i have all the pm's from bryan to prove it. but i'm sick of waiting, what happened last week with one of our picks being put out on the thread was so very wrong and a slap in the face to each and everyone of you..also with this other guy who first came here to start trouble with me...i'm well aware of what these people are trying to do here..lets just say i was being set up....i know what little dirty tricks these people were playing via PM with each other but it all will back fire i assure you of that...you keep harassing someone over and over for a year and the si records will prove this..well a person can only take so much before they lash back which is what i did...i have asked si bob and bryan to do something about it but they wouldn't so now they can keep these people and lose me.

i want no part of a yahoo type forum which is exactly what si has become...people are so quick to judge me but for the life of me i can't understand why they just don't mind their own business , if they don't like what i'm doing then leave...but no, they choose to keep harassing me over and over....now the game is over..i was pushed too far this time.

i will spend a few days looking for a place for us to go but i will not be using si any longer for what we are doing....if any of you have questions feel free to send me a pm but for right now we have to put everything on hold....things will not change here on si and i don't need the stress in my life...all this has taken a toll on me and for the few who orchestrated this, go and have your laugh now but trust me it will be short lived...you achieved what you wanted and that was to drive me off of si, bait me, attack me, harass and stalk me...no problem..you won that part of the battle...but just remember one thing, i have over 200 people here that will back me 1000% ;)...

so everyone please be patient i will do my best to find another place for us...what i tried to put together took alot of work on my part...i spent countless hours putting this together and with your help in the past and with your help in the future i hope we can finally find what we all are looking for.

Peace
t

Dear (Sweet) Patricia- Think about what's happening here ... please.

You refer to people such as me as "coming into our group," "like party crashers," "[who] like to break things up," and so much more in a similar vein. Meanwhile, Tim speaks as the weary Saviour, besieged on all sides by infidels trying to destroy His noble experiment, to assail and harass His flock ... while He wishes only to find for you all a place where the grass is ever green, the sun shines every day, youth is eternal, and where you can live in peace and harmony all the days of your life. But the wicked and the vile constantly thwart Him.

It is all so dramatic. So epic. Such an awesome struggle pitting the faithful against the unbelievers. Why, it is virtually Biblical. Reminiscent of Moses. Reminiscent of the Mormon trek in the 1800's to find a sanctuary where the flock could be ridden of the heretics, once and for all.

The only trouble is ... this is all being played out in a fishbowl. On an internet CHAT line. A public venue open to all who happen to drop by for a look-see, and open for comment by any who pay their nominal fee. A place where I have every bit as much right to be as you. Patricia, this is ONLY A CHAT LINE. If your group truly wants to be left alone, why do all keep discussing it here, where every word you say is being read by tens of thousands, maybe millions? Why don't you stop all these public posts (which invite reply) and just converse in your code? Better yet, why converse here at all? Why not just talk among yourselves through email? Why do you all insist on acting this out on a stage before half the world's population?

I will say this to you: If your group departs on the trek to the Promised Land, I assure you that none of the "outsiders" who have shown up on this thread will attempt to follow you. You will get your wish. You will be left alone.

I truly believe that you deserve goodness to follow you all the days of your life. But not people like me. And they won't, I promise you.

News that made mention of Cableton

"Sycamore teams to make networks easier to operate"

By Ben Heskett
January 11, 2000

URL: news.cnet.com

A group of networking upstarts plans to unveil a strategy tomorrow to make the
growing web of fiber-optic based networks easier to operate.

Spearheaded by high-flying optical equipment provider Sycamore Networks, the
new initiative aspires to allow service providers to extend network connections to
customers without much of the technical “heavy lifting” that now accompanies
such operations.

Those planning to join the effort include telecommunications companies such as
Enron Communications, MCI WorldCom's UUNet and Williams Communications.
Equipment providers such as Ciena, Redback Networks, Germany's Siemens and
Cabletron Systems, among others, also plan to team with Sycamore.

A number of start-ups are also involved, including Pluris, Convergent Networks,
Avici Systems, Ennovate Networks, and Tellium, among others.

"A lot of innovation is happening at the smaller companies,", Sycamore chairman
and co-founder Desh Deshpande said. "In some ways, the younger companies
need to innovate even more."

Sycamore and its partners are all reacting to the growing need for bandwidth as
more people use the Internet and businesses see the benefits of expanded
corporate networks. Along with this need has come the realization that technology
must become increasingly sophisticated to meet the rapidly evolving demands of
businesses worldwide.

The initiative, called optical domain service interconnect (ODSI), hopes to take
the rigid nature of current network layouts and make them more flexible. For
example, a customer could call a service provider and have network bandwidth
provisioned that same day under the new program, according to Deshpande.

The program also aims to allow better communication between equipment that
shuttles data across an optical network and technology--like an Internet router, for
example--that makes intelligent decisions concerning where to send data.

The first meeting of the group will take place later this month. A resulting draft
recommendation is expected by mid-year, according to Scott Larson, Sycamore's
director of marketing for its strategic programs group.

The group then hopes to have a final standard it can demonstrate by the end of
the year, executives said.

Suprisingly absent from the coalition are industry leaders Nortel Networks, Lucent
Technologies, and Cisco Systems, as well as routing upstart Juniper Networks.
But Deshpande said their absence was simply an organizational factor, as the
group formed just three months ago.

Cisco, for one, remains "undecided at this time" whether they will join the effort,
according to a company spokeswoman.
