Hello Terri: I agree with you--completely. Any statements about preference must be based on information obtained via questionnaires. You did not get one? Neither did I.

To use data obtained via site traffic yields distorted information. New people, as you note, can only access SI via the new interface. Visitors, who are not subscribers, can only access the new interface. If someone "hears" about SI and does a shot-in-the-dark URL to access it, he or she will end up with the new SI. Basically, the only way one can made any valid statements about user preference is to have the returned questionnaires to back up one's claims.

Speaking as a researcher, the methodology being used to determine user preference is completely flawed.
