GVTucker,>>>And it should also confirm that being able to predict revenues and earnings from quarter to quarter is actually a very minor part of stock analysis.<<<

But its essential that CFO's have some sense as to revenues and earnings from quarter to quarter.

How come he gets it right and the CFO's haven't a clue?

Mary

GV- Hi.... just trolling on the Intel thread...

Q: Let's say that Niles is right (and I would bet he is...given the proximity to earnings AND his previous within-72-hours-successes)..

Who is (winning)...buying these chips from Intel (in such large supply?)

* Gateway? couldn't get enough chips this quarter, and, apparently didn't up their allotment much...

* Compaq? a possibility...but some analysts saying that Dell is kicking their butt (at an increasing rate) in corporate, although CPQ may have had strong retail sales (picking up IBM slack..exit)..so net/net could be some upside...but would that be enough alone (for Intel to put in such good results?)

* 3rd-tier players? (who have been losing share to the Big 4/5) seem an unlikely source of the additional chips....I've read that many have struggled with getting boxes out the door since the Taiwan shortage (they got hit/weakened by the whole fiasco, and haven't fully recovered)...they've been in the back-of-the-line, a la Gateway, ever since..

* Small, various white-box guys? (a possibility)

* Finally...the point of this exercise...what about Dell? One would think they were a prime receipient of the extra chips....but, now we have the rumors of a possible Dell warning......what's your take...do you think Dell's having a bad quarter??

** I guess there could be some inventory building going on (in anticipation of Microsoft 2000 launches)...that could explain some of the extra sales...

I welcome your (or anyone else's) musings....Where are all these chips going? And who, if any PC manufacturers should have a good quarter (as a result)?
