SBC Communications Moving 25 Million Minutes Per Month of Southwestern Bell Wireless Traffic on Williams Multi-Service Broadband Network(TM)

January 11, 2000 08:29 AM
TULSA, Okla., Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Williams Communications WCG this month began carrying some 25 million minutes per month of Southwestern Bell Wireless traffic over its national fiber-optic network, marking the first wave of the significant volume of voice and data traffic Williams will transport as part of its strategic alliance with SBC Communications SBC .
Southwestern Bell Wireless is a wholly owned subsidiary of SBC Communications. It is the first of several SBC affiliate companies to take advantage of a groundbreaking alliance forged last year between Williams Communications and SBC.

SBC Communications, which hopes to receive FCC approval to begin offering long distance service to its wireline customers in Texas early this year, has made Williams its preferred provider of nationwide long-distance voice and data services, as well as its source for expert technical support.

"Our teams have worked hard to provide for SBC and its affiliates what we offer to the carrier marketplace as a whole -- the customized use of the most advanced, flexible network in the world," said Howard Janzen, president and chief executive officer of Williams Communications. "The alliance with SBC Communications has proved to be a linchpin in Williams Communications' strategy to demonstrate how a company exclusively focused on providing premier carrier services can be a catalyst for increased innovation and competition in this increasingly dynamic marketplace."

Williams Communications is providing dedicated capacity ranging from optical carrier level to T1 in support of 1+ and directory assistance to Southwestern Bell Wireless in a five-state region consisting of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas. Williams Communications is carrying all of Southwestern Bell Wireless traffic except for local calls between cellular phones.

Since turning up service in the past month, Williams Communications has carried more than 16 million minutes of traffic for Southwestern Bell Wireless. This traffic load is expected to rapidly grow to more than 25 million minutes per month.

Williams Communications' next-generation long-distance network, the fourth largest in the United States, is scheduled to reach 33,000 route miles connecting 125 cities by the end of this year. The fully integrated architecture of the Williams Multi-Service Broadband Network(TM) couples ATM core switching with advanced optical networking technologies to provide carriers with data, voice, video and Internet services. Williams Communications has received widespread industry recognition for its network architecture -- most recently the International Engineering Consortium's InfoVision award.
