[GST Telecommunications Swaps California Conduit for Worldwide Fiber's Northwest Network and $30 Million] VANCOUVER, Wash., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- GST Telecommunications, Inc., a leading Integrated Communications Provider (ICP) in California and the western United States, today announced an indefeasible right of use (IRU) agreement with Worldwide Fiber, Inc. under which GST will receive fiber between Seattle and Portland, Ore. and approximately $30 million. In exchange Worldwide Fiber will receive conduit on GST's Sacramento, Calif. to Los Angeles long haul route. This agreement is the third major partnership between GST and Worldwide Fiber. In August 1998, the companies partnered to build a 715-mile fiber network between Portland, Ore. and Sacramento, Calif., and in April 1999 GST swapped fiber and conduit on its Los Angeles to San Diego long haul route in exchange for conduit on Worldwide Fiber's 75-mile Seattle metro ring. "This agreement is another example of GST's actions to leverage its extensive conduit and fiber throughout the West Coast to generate operating capital and acquire strategically-located local and long haul network segments," stated Joe Basile, president and chief executive officer of GST. "Through our various agreements with Worldwide Fiber, we are well on the way towards fully deploying our West Coast network, at a substantial savings over building it out ourselves." "Worldwide Fibers' advanced network is the ideal solution for companies like GST that require high-speed bandwidth, flexible network architecture and right-of-way security to meet the growing demands of their customers," stated Ron Stevenson, president of Worldwide Fiber. "We're particularly pleased to strengthen our relationship with GST and further expand the Worldwide Fiber U.S. Network. This route between Sacramento and Los Angeles is a critical link and facilitates Worldwide Fibers' national expansion by extending our fiber-optic network capacity and providing us access to our southern California networks." GST boasts one of the most extensive and robust network infrastructures in the western United States. Alone or in conjunction with other companies, GST has deployed its next-generation Virtual Integrated Transport and Access (VITA) network into 19 markets in eight western states, covering more than 6,800 route miles. One of the first of its kind, the VITA network utilizes IP, packet, cell, and frame technologies and advanced switching technologies to combine voice and data traffic onto a common network architecture, for enhanced technical and economic performance.
