Plans to Provide Web Access in All Circuit City Locations
Announces Co-Promotion of Sony Memory Stick(R)
RICHMOND, Va., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Circuit City Stores, Inc. today reported December 1999 sales for the company, the Circuit City Group (NYSE:CC) and the CarMax Group (NYSE:KMX) and announced plans to extend Web access to all Circuit City locations and to co-promote Sony Memory Stick(R) products in all stores and on the Circuit City Web site.
December 1999 Sales

For the month, total sales for Circuit City Stores, Inc. rose 14 percent to $1.78 billion from $1.57 billion in December 1998. Total sales for the Circuit City Group were $1.63 billion, which represents a 12 percent increase from December 1998 sales of $1.45 billion and a 6 percent increase in comparable store sales. Total sales for the CarMax Group were $152.1 million, which represents a 38 percent increase from $110.5 million in December 1998 and a 9 percent increase in comparable store sales.

"In December, we continued to see strong sales of newer technologies and highly featured products, complemented by an improved personal computer sales pace related to the introduction of the instant, in-store credit for CompuServe Internet service signups," said Richard L. Sharp, Circuit City's chairman and chief executive officer. "Products such as DVD, DIRECTV, digital camcorders and big-screen televisions produced particularly healthy year-over- year increases.

"At CarMax, we reported our fourth consecutive month of comparable store sales growth," said Sharp. "We are especially pleased that these improved results continue to be driven by the core business -- the used-car superstores."

E-Commerce Plans

"We were exceptionally pleased by the performance of the Circuit City e- commerce site during its first, peak holiday season," said Sharp. "We have continuously enhanced the site since its introduction last July, adding product categories and brand names as well as improving navigation. Across the holiday period, we consistently met our high standards for product availability, shipment schedules and customer response time. As a next step, we plan to extend Web access into all Circuit City stores. By April, all stores will be able to access our Web store inventory from any of the point- of-sale terminals located throughout the store. Customers also will have full access to the Circuit City Web site as part of the in-store America Online promotions that we announced last month. In-store access will expand product selection and inventory availability and allow customers to arrange for shipment directly to their homes or select gifts for shipment to family and friends. In-store access represents another consumer advantage offered by the tight integration of our bricks-and-mortar locations with the growing business of electronic commerce. It helps us to further ensure that Circuit City customers can always find the products they want."
