Hutchison Whampoa has agreed that the fixed-line telecommunications activities it pursues in China will be carried out by the joint venture.

This is good; I would like it better if Hutch committed also to run all satellite telco activities through the jv. Although not as wide a pipe as terrestrial fiber, there are vast areas in China not effectively served by fixed line access from pstn. As I have said before on this thread, Hutch is a very, very strategically well placed player, not only in China but in most of SE Asia. If the potential development of i-net and telco traffic in the region is half what is being projected, this will be a very good partner.

Right now, internet activity, portals and use are exploding in China, and MII and MOF et al. are not trying to staunch it, for the time being.
