DEC WAS in a high growth area-- data communications and
networking. Trouble was, and they had smart folks, that
DEC's visions of networking were the wrong ones. That is
where the Ciscos of the world emerged.

to me this makes it even worse for LU/McGinn to allow this to happen. They had the opportunities and just did not execute.(McGinn's own words).
