ESS Technology's DVD chip sales rocket to 500,000 in one quarter

FREMONT, Calif. — ESS Technology Inc. here has found a goldmine in DVD, the digital video disk. The company said today (1/12) that it shipped more than 500,000 DVD chips in the fourth quarter of 1999, making it one of the fastest growing products in the company's history.

ESS's first DVD production shipments began in September and hit the half-million mark during the last quarter of the year.

"I am very pleased at the speed that our customers have adopted our new DVD solution," said Robert Blair, president and CEO of ESS Technology, which also Internet, communications, and PC audio chips. "Our third-generation DVD chip provides the lowest cost, high-performance DVD solution available today."

At the annual Consumer Electronic Show held in Las Vegas last week, many of the OEMs exhibited their latest DVD players using ESS's solution, including Denon, Sony, Acer, Sampo, Raite and Diotech in Japan, and Apex and Shinco in China.
