Your statement proves my point, they buy brands they have heard of and trust, and Intel fits that category. AMD and Athlon don't.

Great point. Apple is a superb marketer, with a vastly over-priced, incompatable product. Do you or anyone on this thread think that they have a superior product to AMD or Intel? Yet they are a leader in market share.

So what exactly is it that sells computers?

Speaking of box makers, CNBC reported in the evening today that the average selling price for PCs increased from below $800 to $844 either last month or in November. There is supposed to be a WSJ article about it tomorrow.
