Written five years ago by a wise Uncle:

CHICKEN SOUP

Recent medical research has demonstrated the great
therapeutic value of chicken soup. The Jewish housewife
knew this from centuries of experience as she used it as
her first line of defense against all ailments.
Yet, this was not always so.

The chicken is nowhere mentioned in the Bible.
Indeed, the mention of roosters in Isaiah 27:7, Job 38:36,
and Proverbs 30:31 are explained by the Rabbis as
references to other fowl.

Roosters and hens were unknown in Palestine until
about the second or third century before the Common Era.
variously described as having been introduced from
Persia or Babylonia, the Hebrew word Tarnegol (chicken)
is derived from the Babylonian.

According to the criteria in Levitious 11:13-19,
the chicken is technically unclean since, like the ostrich,
it is not a true flying fowl, but is mainly earth oriented.
In fact, the Rabbis of the Talmud argued its acceptance
and finally approved its use. Somewhere in the Talmud
(the writer has misplaced the reference), there is even
a debate whether the chicken is meat or pareve!

Out of all this, the chicken has emerged as a basic
feature of the Jewish cuisine.

Barry: I sure hope they don't have to seek FDA approval for this 'essential drug'. I mean look at what the FDA has done for ADVR. Pretty soon we will go into the super market and all the shelves will be cleared of Chicken Soup?
Then maybe the populace will start to write their Congressman and Senators and stand up and shout. "Enough Already"?
