I fail to see how the consumer would be hurt by a break-up of Microsoft.

The OS division, working alone is forced to compete. My guess is, that MS would innovate more. Act more nimble and focus more on portable/embedded market.

The app division would still crank out great products.

The internet division, on their own P&L would be valued appropriately and free to acquire companies and products at a rate equivelant to the other internuts...

The shareholder and the consumer would benefit IMHO.
