CBS last week said it better that I can.

"Shares of disk-drive makers and other storage specialists also advanced, with Western Digital (WDC: news, msgs) gaining 3/4, or 16 percent, to 5 5/16. Quantum's hard disk drive group (HDD: news, msgs) rose 5/8 to 8 5/8.

Komag (KMAG: news, msgs) jumped 1/4 to 3 9/16 and Maxtor (MXTR: news, msgs) advanced 5/8 to 7 3/4. Iomega (IOM: news, msgs) fell 1/16 to 4 1/2.

"Fourth quarter in desktop drives looks pretty good," said Rob Cihra, an analyst at ING Barings. "These stocks are so cheap, it's not surprising on any given day if there's any whiff of good news that it floods through pretty quickly."

ANY GOOD NEWS is what I'm waiting for.

<Wall Street Journal reports this morning that the average PC price has gone from $789 in Sept. to $844 in December. They attribute this rise to a "huge drop-off in competition..">

It seems likely to me that the rise in ASP would be more due to the $400 cash rebates for Internet services. While this is no gift, it seems to be a great help to PC sales. Maybe the buyers think with the extra $400, they can afford a slightly better machine. So, what happens when these deals get pulled? MSN has found that Calif. law says a buyer can drop their 3 year ISP contract with no recourse.

Regards,

Mark

PS Kudos to Lawrence Kam for APM short. I thought he was getting greedy sticking it out to the end, but he was right.

Has this or the demise of Yamaha helped RDRT?

And disproving the idea that commodity prices cannot recover once they are down. However, looking at retail prices, it seems to me that Fugitsu is still fully committed to giving away their disk drives. But Western Digital has the highest retail prices for comparable capacity disks. I would like very much to see how that affects their unit sales and revenues. Any idea of the reporting dates of HDD, MXTR and WDC ? I don't suppose Fugitsu issues a report of their disk operation. By the way, Seagate is also usually the lowest priced retail vendor. A lot of good that strategy did for them lately.

Off Topic-Can anyone tell me how to get %@#*&#@ internet explorer to automatically update a page such as SubjectMarks without bringing up an outdated page first and my having to hit refresh? As usual, Bill's Help page is oblivious to the fact anyone might want to do this. -Z
