Ed, re spreading royalty payments... It sounds like you are receiving the royalties as an individual (not as a corporation, etc.). Individuals are on a cash basis ... whatever year you receive income, you pay on it. The federal government used to have a provision to average personal income over a period of years but this was discontinued when Congress decided it was being too generous with its money. <G> I'm not an authority, so hopefully the real experts on the thread will correct me if I'm wrong.
