Hi guys,

Just one guys anecdote, and maybe the REAL experts on EMC's storage SOFTWARE offerings can elaborate...

Just went to a technology Architecture, high-level meeting where both SUN and EMC were discussed. They are in the running for a LARGE ERP/SAP installation, and while I was trying to make sure the companies that will be invited to bid will be the major ones, all management and the people there wanted to hear was as follows...

We HAVE to invite HP, DEC/Compaq, IBM and other to the big bids...

Management will do so, but the decision is already made, pretty much. As both a SUN and EMC shareholder, I like it, but here is what happened...

1- With SUN's new Solaris 8 & E10,000 technologies, with dynamic/virtual partitioning, the scalability of their boxes, the high-speed switched backplane for connecting 2 or more E10000, they blow away everybody , while having one of the HIGHEST costs of the bidders, with up to DOUBLE the cost by TPC/c standards throughput.

That's probably 2x E10000 sales for SUN...

2- Myself and expecially some others recommended a storage solution, and again it came down to just one vendor, EMC.

Why ?

Because of the TimeFinder software, and other components for high-speed, reliable, partitioning & mirroring technologies... EMC was being sold by the prime SI, with my help, as a SPECTACULAR software offering for leveraging enterprise class data, with almost no mention of the underlying hardware.. The 2Km HotSite backup facility was also mentionned, although I only caught part of it...

Very cool...

Probably, here goes a high-end Symmetrix FC sale here too..

All, in all, I hope to have done my part (as little as it is) to make my SUN & EMC investments pay off.

Ideally, based on what was explored, I want to buy more EMC now, and regret that I only have 600 shares or so...

Now, can someone technical here explain ALL the software product offerings that leverage EMC's excellent SAN high-end offering.

Take care everyone.

Don't let ANYBODY scare you out of your shares, this baby is a keeper... EMC is a "sexy" internet/enterprise computing play

Jean

P.S. Does someone know how EMC is doing in their neck of the woods, as in anecdotal new installs ?

P.S.2: What is the institutional % of EMC's ... Is it mostly owned by institutions ?
