Engineer, I think you highlighted the important part, mainly having an experience in a foreign country LOOKING for a phone. If you are in a major hotel you can make a call, although it isn't cheap. But try roaming around even a developed city and needing to make a call. Chaos! I spent over an hour and more money than I care to admit trying to make a call back from Amsterdam to a buddy of mine because I missed his bachelor party. To me, that was a very important call. In Rio, forget it. You need to wait for the reruns.

<<. For example, on the cruise ship I was on last week, they had SAT phones wihch cost $9.50 a minute. I can see them using Globalstar phones wiht a main trunk capability to provide the same service at much less. Alot of lines out there at 1500 people per cruise ship. >>

Maybe we should start a business where G* phones are rented to those going on a cruise, on vacation, whatever. Each renter would have their own phone during the duration at a reasonable price. At $10/minute they could wash a $30/day rental in three minutes. Reserve it right through the travel service; it's waiting for you when you board or arrive, just like a rental car. Maybe rental car agencies should also rent G* phones. MOU are charged to your credit card.

(Anyone who wants to is welcome to run with the idea!)
