Tench,

Re:"AMD stock action"

I suspect that the real number will be managed by AMD to show a decent comparison over last year Q4 profits of $0.15.

But the stock reaction will react to Jerry's forward looking guidance.

And specifically wrt:

Dresden/Copper status.
Athlon volumes in Q1 2000.
Any new OEMs.
Flash outlook.

I think Intels price action is not so much based on the $0.69 but their forward guidance on:

Increased margins of 61%.
Only slight decline in Q1 over Q4.
Upside in mfg volumes.
Realization that Intel is sitting on $6Bn of unrealized profits. At a "cook the books" rate of $300M/Qtr that translates to 20 quarters of "help" on the earnings front.

regards,

Kash

PS: Sorry about the "cook the books" - Intel only recently did what folks like GE, CSCO et al have been doing forever -taking advantage of cash, pensions, acquisitions etc to make the numbers look great.

I know what you guys expect come AMD earnings announcement. (It's on Wednesday, right?) But I wonder what the Street is expecting, especially as AMD approaches 40 and beyond. It'd be a shame for AMD longs if the Street says, "Oh, AMD only made 0.10 EPS last quarter? Gee, that's weak. Let's sell."

The consensus eps estimate for Q4 was just reduced in the past week from <$.07> to <$.06>. The range in estimates from analysts is from <$.25> to $.05. The whisper number two weeks ago was the same as the consensus estimate at that time: <$.07>.

It looks to me like the street will go nuts if AMD makes $.10 eps this quarter.

Of course, some of you are predicting 0.25 EPS and above. But if that were the case, wouldn't AMD have changed their story by now? Last time I heard, AMD said they might break even this quarter.

This thread leans towards irrational exuberance at times. I will be irrationally exuberant if AMD breaks even this quarter.

So I guess I'm wondering what the Street expects in light of INTC's earnings, the strength of AMD stock, and the fact that AMD hasn't gone beyond their "might break even" story.

I think the street pretty much knows AMD's 2000 roadmap and now wants to see if there really is a return to profitability. JMHO
