I can remember the whining on the old thread up to March, 1999, that Jacobs was not being candid or open enough with the analysts, because he was keeping things close to the vest and would not speculate much. However, his honesty paid off finally; I think they now appreciate his honesty and believe what he says in interviews, conference calls and the company therefore has credibility.

Diamond...humility in a CEO is a key asset. Vision along with understanding your core strengths and weaknesses are key. Over the years many companies could have significantly improved their competitive position by teaming up with qcom. Unfortunately for them their CEO's lacked humility and believed they were invincible. Not facing your weaknesses is as important as understanding your strengths. This reality check ultimately lies with the CEO.

In the past CEO's from ERCY,MOT,NOK,T,Rockwell had unique opportunities with QCOM and cdma and yet failed to capitalize on them. Instead we see Kyocera, Hitachi, Samsung, LG, LU, DDI, DDO and others (with qcom) creating the cdma competitive environment. These companies all have seen their own strengths and have not tried to re-invent cdma to satisfy their own corporate/ceo ego.

Look at the work that is going on today with HDR. We have visionaries who are taking action (w/qcom) The results will be seen in 2001 when HDR is rolled out. There will be a few significant companies who will be far behind the new competition. ERCY and NOK are still trying to come out with their cdma phones (MOT is still limping along). There are many factors, but humility in the CEO goes along way to guide a vision -it helps you figure out who to partner with.

Just think what will happen when the new entrants have video phones, pocket internet devices and internet phones become the new minimum criteria in a device. Its just around the corner. FWIT
