As I see it , it behoves AT&T not to buy @Home. AS things stand now AT&T is a partner in a venture with many cable Co.'s. AT&T would like to be partners with as many cable co.'s as possible ,for delivery of telephony via cable services.
They have a better chance of being the chosen one as they are already a partner.

Yours is just one of a few interpretations of his comments. My impression is that he wasn't prepared to answer the question - so he rambled a bit; keep in mind that this was a touchy feely conference. He wasn't talking to a bunch of analysts.
