Jim -
I don't doubt that DELL's "recommended configurations" will support Win2K. Why, then did DELL not get them certified well before launch, so that commercial customers could make buying plans?

You are making a mountain out of molehill IMO.
It's not a mountain, but it does make your statement about DELL shipping workstations with Win2K pretty much unsupportable when the product is not certified.

I know a fair amount about how enterprise IT makes purchasing decisions - and not being on the certified list pretty much makes it impossible to order the products in most cases. Enterprise customers typically buy "platinum" support for MSFT - this gives them 1-stop shopping for any problems associated with MSFT products. EXCEPT if the HW is not on the compatibility list...

Few enterprise shops would allow a purchase decision when the hardware is outside of their service agreement - why should they take a chance? The whole reason to buy a platinum agreement is so that any user can go direct to MSFT (which allows the IT department to unload that support burden). Kind of like not being UL certified - doesn't mean the product will burn up, but it does mean that your insurance won't pay if it does.

There may be a rational and even good reason why DELL did not certify their workstation products. My point is simply that they won't be selling those products to commercial accounts until they are certified, which means that any sales in January are unlikely - I would be willing to bet that DELL does not even offer the workstation products out the door with Win2K until they are certified, and that will not be in January...
