RE>>God loves a cheerful giver but those who are content to just give 10% are not doing any service to God, they are barely succeeding to keep the curse at bay. Those who have walked with God for a while learn that 10% given to God is nothing more than chump change. Jesus wasn't impressed with anyone but that dear old widow who gave it all.<< I think you have display a very unchristian attitude in what you have said... God has already promised to bless those who tithe should we call God a liar? Also I do not go for those who lay out this mentality that you can never know when you have given enough. They just keep passing the hat with more and more needs many of them ridiculous. The most ridiculous offering I ever saw was for a swimming pool to be built at a lakeside camp for tired pastors so they could "retreat" all year long. First if everyone in the church gives 10% the churches would not be poor ! 'Chump Change' is not what I would say to Abraham who was the first to give 10%. God was pleased with Abraham how can you say that Jesus will not be please with a 10% tithe ( I am not speaking about gifts ) I see God upset because most people don't even give 10%.. Malachi 3:8 Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. If you have a congregation of 20 families then 10% of the first 10 families would pay the pastors wage and he would be equal with them. There would still then be another wage for the poor and they could support an entire family apart from the pastor. That is based on a mere 20 wage earning congregation. How many churches are there where there are more than that and they do not even support the pastor?? If the pastors have to work a 40 hour week then the sermons will not be less than great even if he does his best especially if he also supports a family ( time wise ) RE>>Should anyone brag about giving a whole 10%<< Who asked anyone to brag.. I point out that that is the TAX that God has set for His New Testament Church under the order of Melchisedec which is the order of Jesus. This is the freedom of the Tithe... Paul points out that the tithe is 10% according to the order of Melchisedec.. that is the TAX... After that we are FREE to give without torturing ourselves as to "when is enough" Surely no one I know would ever suggest that if we saw a brother in need that we say " sorry I gave at the Church " 1 John 3:17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him? This is about giving to the Church... not everyday Christian charity. RE>>they are barely succeeding to keep the curse at bay.<< Next time your at church Chris count how many people attend who earn a wage enough to live on... Go home and average out what you think they make $1000/month?? Then take 10% of that and ask your pastor what the average tithe is in your church... TRY ME and see if you do not turn up believing that the Church would do better if everyone Tithed according to the Ceremonial Law Given under Christ in Abraham to Melchisedec. You will likely be surprised that 'leaving it up to the conscience' is likely the poorest way to go ! I have been blessed for a number of year to attend churches that realize that the tithe of Melchezidek is still valid and with small congregations have manage quite well. That is not to say that those who tithe are CHEAP and do not give to those in need that is a foolish thing to think in fact if I had to give an "oppinion" I believe the opposite to be true because those who tithe are usually more financially accountable than those who "wing it" I challenge you to do the "math" in your own church :-} Hebrews 6:20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus , made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. Hebrews 7:1 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him; This was the Tithe that Abraham the Father of the Faith gave to Jesus: Hebrews 7:2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace; Lets not call it chump change or accuse anyone of bragging. It is our duty before God and I think it needs to be taught.
