Lizzie, you are right about the marketing back then. I was on a campus wide committee to select a standard for databases to be used by Ohio State. After a lot of angst and a long time, we selected Sybase over Oracle. At the time it seemed to me that much of the decision was based on how well we were "courted" and who had the best press. As it turns out, the campus has gradually moved more and more to oracle for the central applications and sql server for the department level ones.

You should check your history. It was very poor marketing that hurt Sybase the most back then. Hoffman's history at Sybase is checkered at best. The company is just now recovering from the damage done by Hoffman and his crew.
