Government's big move on E-commerce
one giant step closer, thanks to software

Bringing the National Governors' Association's controversial proposal to tax e-commerce a giant step closer, the first phase of what may become government's "trusted third party" in collecting an e-commerce sales tax is set to be released this quarter.
With the popularity explosion of the Internet and e-commerce, veteran tax software company Taxware International, Inc., founded in 1964, developed an on-line tax system several years ago which offers Web mall owners and merchants a method for the automatic calculation of sales and international tax. The system is sold to Taxware's clients, such as Netscape, who then include the software in online storefront packages purchased by merchants. Online stores are periodically sold program supplements in order to keep up with changing tax laws.

Scott Walters, vice president of research and development at Taxware, explained the company's new system in an exclusive WorldNetDaily interview.

What makes the new system unique is that it is a remotely located server to which merchants connect by paying a fee to Taxware. The "transaction tax server," which can be located anywhere in the world, allows Taxware to update tax laws automatically, rather than selling update packages to merchants who then must revise their software (cont)

I feel sorry for the folks who bought bags as high as $5000 (over 50% premium to melt) during the early 1999 Y2K hype.
