Maybe $ per employee is not the metric to use. What is one company employees cafeteria workers and floor sweepers directly and the other contracts that work out. What about dollars per patent or dollars per sq ft of mfg facilities.
Have you factored debt into the cost? Not sure if it's appropriate but it could be a factor.
One key patent could be worth hundreds of millions.

I agree it's not a key metric, but it's been used a lot regarding pre-IPO acquisitions, so I threw it out there for comparison.

In the case of ETEK, I believe their packaging and mfging resources are more valuable than any other key factor. At least at the outset.
