RESEARCH ALERT - Merrill raises LSI Logic

NEW YORK, Jan 18 (Reuters) - Merrill Lynch said on Tuesday it raised its
intermediate-term rating on LSI Logic Corp.(NYSE:LSI - news) to buy from accumulate,
citing what it said was potential upside to LSI's 2000 earnings outlook and the stock's
''reasonable valuation.''

-- said it raised 2000 earnings estimate from $2.21 to
$2.32.
-- projected preliminary 2001 earnings at $2.90 to $3.00.
-- raised price objective for the stock to $100.
-- said it expects gross margin to improve to 44.2 percent

from an anticipated 38.3 percent in 1999.

-- shares were up 6-1/4 at 80-1/8 in midday trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Cosmo - if indeed Q is being held back, how does selling to those willing to pay the ask (at a "bargain" price?) do anything for anyone?

I have never quite grasped this theory of a stock being "held back" because I don't see how one could benefit (ignoring the question of whether it could be done or not)

Would you take a stab at an explanation?
