I have had crash nightmares and now take back-ups very seriously.

I have a very old 386 hard drive years of data on it and the controller on the hard drive went..I think. It's an old NEC PowerMate 386 and I am keeping the Hard Drive in case I ever come across another similar one. (not likely)

I am actually going to take it a step more in depth if need be. I am prepared to swap the platters (risky), as I am not 100% convinced it's the hard drive controller on the drive itself. One day I turned it on and the hard drive would not work. It's not the controller built into the motherboard, as that was check with a separate controller card.

BTW
How does your system get proper cooling (air flow) with the case apart (Bob)?

Hey, that story was even better than the one about the backhoe! Not sure how you'll top it in a few months. But, just in case, have you considered installing a sprinkler system... in your house? ;^)

Hi Bob,
when I tried searching at metacrawler on your card it led me to this address

achineseprincess.com

Is your card a scsi or IDE?

If its scsi, I could see where you might need a similar card. If its IDE, you should be able to find a suitable generic card replacement (eide, etc)

Tsk. Exposed electronics, fire risk, and second hand smoke from smoldering circuit boards. Better watch out. Those OSHA-types might try and gig Go2Net for your unsafe working conditions.

Can't help you with the controller board. I could see my way clear to loaning you my sledge hammer and soldering iron. Probably couldn't hurt at this stage.

Betcha haven't been to church lately. <g>

Bob I think you should submit both this and the backhoe story as scripts. Might just make enough back to pay for the damages.

I am ROFL but wish you luck at the same time. Crashes, for any reason are just not fun.
