Intel Investors - Intel Introduces Network Adapter with an on-board Encryption Coprocessor for secure Network transmissions.
"Featuring an on-board network encryption co-processor, the Intel(R) PRO/100 S Management Adapter and the Intel(R) PRO/100 S Server Adapter help enable higher performance and end-to-end security within the LAN to safeguard continuously the confidentiality and integrity of data that flows between the personal computer (PC) and the network server. "
"Intel and Microsoft have worked together to provide security infrastructure to users. "Microsoft's goal is to help customers protect their network information and enable customers build more secure communications in the new Internet world," said Jim Allchin, senior vice president, Platform Group, Microsoft Corporation. "Our efforts with Intel to develop a faster and more secure infrastructure is evident in Windows 2000 support for IPSec and the offloading of encryption and decryption within Intel's new PRO/100 S adapters."
The Intel PRO/100 S Management Adapter and the Intel PRO/100 S Server Adapter both feature Intel's network security chipset, which combines the Intel(R) GD82559C Fast Ethernet PCI Controller and the Intel(R) 82594ED network encryption co-processor, to help companies protect their proprietary information by encrypting data as it travels over the corporate network. Intel Delivers Trusted Network Security Solutions With New Family of Adapters; Intel Vice President Greg Lang to Deliver Keynote Address During RSA Conference 2000
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 18, 2000--Intel Corporation today announced, during the ninth annual RSA Conference, its new family of Intel(R) PRO/100 S network security-enabled adapters, which help accelerate network security over the local area network (LAN) and are designed for today's e-business network environment. In addition, Greg Lang, vice president and general manager, Intel's Network Interface Division, will deliver a keynote presentation during the conference on Jan. 19 entitled, "Security Building Blocks for e-business."(b)
Featuring an on-board network encryption co-processor, the Intel(R) PRO/100 S Management Adapter and the Intel(R) PRO/100 S Server Adapter help enable higher performance and end-to-end security within the LAN to safeguard continuously the confidentiality and integrity of data that flows between the personal computer (PC) and the network server.
The network and computer security market is expected to expand rapidly worldwide from an estimated total value of $2.3 billion in 1998 to more than $10 billion by 2003, according to The Yankee Group, an independent research firm.(c)
While many companies currently equate a firewall with network security, this type of precaution only protects the 'front door' of the network from external attack. According to the 1999 Computer Security Institute/ Federal Bureau of Investigation Computer Crime & Security Survey, 55 percent of respondents experienced unauthorized network access from intruders inside their organization within the past year and most of their network security breaches have occurred within the LAN.(d)
"With the significant increase in Internet, Intranet and extranet traffic on local enterprise networks, the risk to network security is greater than ever before," said Lang. "Intel PRO/100 S adapters are designed to provide a transparent layer of security to help protect companies against costly network security breaches."
Intel(R) PRO/100 S Management and Server adapters support Internet Protocol Security (IPSec), which is recognized as a key network security standard for e-business. Intel's IPSec-enabled adapters are optimized for Microsoft Windows(a) 2000, the first operating system that incorporates standards-based IPSec. Windows 2000 helps eliminate the security processing burden on the PC's central processing unit by offloading network security functions to the PRO/100 S adapter.

Intel PRO/100 S Management and Server adapters also support the Wired for Management 2.0 specification, which allows information technology managers to remotely manage, monitor and maintain PCs and servers, thereby lowering support costs. The Intel PRO/100 S Server Adapter also helps alleviate server bottlenecks and maximize server uptime through fault tolerance and load balancing software.
Intel PRO/100 S network security-enabled adapters feature Intel SingleDriver(TM) technology, which offers a common driver set across Intel's existing Intel(R) PRO/1000 adapter family, to help simplify installation and maintenance on the network. Intel adapters are based on a common hardware and software architecture that provides compatibility across desktop, server and mobile platforms. Information regarding operating systems supported by Intel PRO/100 S adapters can be found on Intel's Web site at intel.com. For more information on network security, please visit intel.com.
Pricing and Availability
The Intel PRO/100 S Management Adapter is now shipping at a U.S. suggested list price of $112. The Intel PRO/100 S Server Adapter is now shipping at a U.S. suggested list price of $139.
Several major original equipment manufacturers, including Compaq, Dell, Hewlett-Packard and IBM, plan to support network security and will begin shipping the Intel PRO/100 S adapters this year. Compaq will ship the Intel PRO/100 S Management Adapter later this year and has been involved in a "Security Briefing Seminar Series" with Intel and Microsoft to focus on increased LAN Security. Hewlett Packard has introduced the HP Vectra Secured Client(a) corporate PC, which comes equipped with the Intel PRO/100 S Management Adapter to provide a highly manageable and integrated security solution at the client level. IBM has also been focused on information security and in September 1999 announced the industry's leading embedded security chip technology in IBM PC 300PL(a) desktops, which feature an Intel IPSec-enabled adapter.
Intel, the world's largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communications products. Additional information about Intel is available at www.intel.com/pressroom.
